Lily didn’t have an answer, nor did she care to find one. “I’m starving,” she said instead, pushing herself up.
“Let’s order takeout.”
They spent the evening together, talking over boxes of noodles and cold drinks. For a while, Lily managed to laugh, and the tightness in her chest eased. By the time she finished venting everything that had been building inside her, she felt lighter, like the storm inside her had finally begun to quiet.
But still, one thought lingered. David wouldn’t stop. She could see it in his eyes. And she was right, somewhere out there, he was already planning his next move.
That night, afraid he might call again, Lily switched off her phone before going to bed. She wanted silence, no messages, no interruptions, and definitely no more of David Hardison.
For once, she just wanted to sleep in peace.
