The next morning, the grand hall bustled with courtiers and servants, scrolls passing hand to hand as preparations for the upcoming council meeting with Alpha Draven’s pack began. Father sat at the head of the table, his face unreadable as the steward read out assignments.
When Seraphina’s name was called, I nearly choked on my tea.
“By Alpha Draven’s direct orders,” the steward announced, his voice echoing through the chamber, “Lady Seraphina will personally oversee the translation of trade agreements into our pack’s script, draft correspondence to the border lords, and review the grain and livestock ledgers to ensure accurate tribute counts. She will also serve as hostess during the reception of Draven’s emissaries—ensuring every guest is received with protocol.”
A hush fell over the room.
The color drained from Seraphina’s face. “What?” she spat, her voice too sharp for courtly ears. “That’s—those are clerical tasks. For scribes. For advisors. Not for me.”
