Chapter 14

She must've dozed off in the study last night, but how on earth did she end up in Marcus's room? Sleepwalking? Or... was it Audrey's subconscious meddling again, luring her into Marcus's room? Elaine freaked herself out with that thought, giving a little shiver. Lately her imagination seemed to be getting out of hand. All she wanted was to get out of his room ASAP. As she ran downstairs, she ran right into Marcus, who was having his breakfast. Instant awkward. Clearing her throat, Elaine tried to act casual as she sat at the table. Mrs. Thompson brought breakfast right over. Marcus glanced at her wrinkled clothes and instantly frowned. "Go change," he told her. Then it hit her—she was still in yesterday's outfit. But whatever, she figured she'd finish eating first. Seeing her still glued to the chair, Marcus reminded her again, "Didn't you say you wanted to come to the office with me?" That almost slipped her mind—what a pleasant surprise. He actually agreed? "You're saying yes?" Her face lit up like a lamp, and she bolted upstairs. "Wait for me, I'll be super quick!" Elaine changed and hopped into the front passenger seat of Marcus's car again. Twice in two days—after two dead-silent years of nothing? Even she couldn't help but feel a little triumphant. She kinda hoped Audrey could see her now, sitting in her husband's car like she belonged there. After a long silence, Marcus asked, "So, which area do you want to learn about?" "Huh?" Elaine was still buzzing from earlier and hadn't really caught that. Marcus slowed it down for her. "Which department do you want to be in?" "Management," she blurted without thinking. Then instantly thought, oops—too bold? But she wanted this badly. If she ever hoped to take back Valtros Group, she needed to have some basic skills at least. Marcus didn't answer right away. He had a complicated look on his face. After a pause, he made the call for her. "Start with the Secretary Department." Elaine wasn't in a position to say no anyway, so she just said, "Okay." Besides, the Secretary Department technically falls under Management. She should still be able to learn something decent there. Honestly, the Cybersecurity Department would've suited her better. She didn't mean to brag, but she could practically run that team solo. The car stopped in front of the building. Henry was already waiting. Marcus didn't even bother taking the keys—he just got out, and Henry took the wheel like it was normal. But having Elaine by his side was anything but normal—that turned heads instantly. They had never shown up together before, and her riding with him? That was new. Everyone at Orion Axis Group knew the "Mrs. Sinclair" was barely even a title, let alone a respected one. Elaine took a deep breath. She was in this woman's body now, so settling scores? Yeah, that was part of the deal. Starting today, the players better buckle up. Payback was coming. With a sweet smile plastered on her face, she deliberately walked side by side with Marcus. He shot her a look of contempt but didn't say anything—so that kinda counted as approval? As they walked through the company, people couldn't help sneaking curious glances at Elaine. But even then, they still respectfully greeted Marcus. "Morning, President Sinclair."
