Elaine felt oddly awkward around them, like a quiet guilt sitting heavy inside her. Probably because, deep down, she knew she wasn't Audrey—their real daughter-in-law. She was just filling in shoes that weren't hers.
"Hi, Arthur. Hi, Paulina," Elaine stepped forward with a small nod, politely greeting them.
Paulina hurried over and held her arm with a smile. "Glad you're back. That's what matters."
Oliver copied Elaine's gesture and greeted them too. "Hello, Arthur. Hello, Paulina."
The older couple clearly had no idea who he was. Arthur looked puzzled. "And you are...?"
"You guys should know him," Marcus said calmly, handing Arthur a paper. "This has his parents' info on it."
Even though Oliver's background documents looked flawless, Marcus had already doubted Audrey's identity. So by his logic, there's no way Oliver could really be a distant relative of hers.
