My lips parted to speak but nothing came out.
I was utterly baffled.
I couldn’t think of a single reason as to why Lucian would feel the need to apologize. He claimed that I was poisoned, yet I still couldn’t comprehend why that would make it his fault.
My memories were still fuzzy. I could faintly remember speaking with Julius Venmer and then I may have exchanged a few words with his father. However, anything beyond that was purely locked in a haze.
I gently shook my head. “Lucian, what could you possibly have to be sorry for?” I asked him. “If what you’ve told me is true—that I was apparently poisoned. It isn’t as if you handed me the glass yourself.”
His head remained lowered toward his chest in shame. “That’s hardly an excuse. I knew something was wrong the moment that stupid waiter handed you the wineglass.”
I held out a hand to stop him. “Wait, stop. Lucian, you’re telling me that you actually saw what happened?”
