Lucille felt a lump in her throat. She was suffocated by a surging melancholy that she could not relieve. The world in front of her eyes seemed to be consumed by darkness. She refused to acknowledge the news, but she had to face it.
Lucille closed her eyes. No sound could reach her ears. Even the soothing words rivaling a sonnet that Joseph assiduously whispered into her ears could not placate the sorrow in her heart.
She lifted her gaze toward the ink-stained sky studded with plunging warplanes. Lucille took a deep breath and shouted, "Grandma, you're still alive, aren't you?"
"If you are, come out and see me.
"All these years, I've missed you terribly..."
Towards the end, Lucille's voice trembled, and her eyes reddened instantaneously.
