"Well…" Eleanor faltered, her voice trailing off. "Why didn't you tell us sooner? But what if Sylvia's family really is loaded?"
"Mom, are you serious?" Hannah snapped, her brows knitting together in disbelief. "What does that have to do with anything? Harold's been through hell, and you're still hung up on their money?"
Frustration boiled in Hannah's chest. Eleanor was utterly hopeless!
Eleanor's face flushed, then turned pale. Hannah's words left her at a loss, and for once, she couldn't muster a comeback.
"That's it," Harold declared, standing abruptly. "I'm done with Sylvia. I'm not calling her, and I'm not going back to look for her. From now on, we're finished—completely done."
The words felt like a weight lifting off his chest. He could see Eleanor's resolve beginning to crack as well.
He pressed on, saying, "Look at Hailey and Yarrick. Or Hannah and Winston. They're happy—really happy. But me and Sylvia? We're a mess—a nightmare from start to finish!"
