The iron chains grew impossibly large as the ground in front of them began to shift.
Sabrina was terrified and ducked behind Maeve for protection.
The ground split open a moment later, revealing a gaping hole about 30 square feet wide.
"W-What... what is that?" Sabrina stammered while pointing at the dark pit.
The air that wafted up was stale and heavy, carrying the distinct scent of something long forgotten.
"Seriously? It's an underground tunnel," Lyra said. "When you dig through mountains, finding something like this isn't unusual.
"But the Hackett family doesn't exactly run an underground railway. So, what's the point of this?"
Maeve said, "Let's go down to find out."
"I'll go first," Zion said and took her hand.
Maeve nodded silently.
Zion pulled a flashlight from his pocket, and its beam cut through the shadows. Without hesitation, the group descended the worn, creaky staircase.
