Maeve froze.
Liam added, "Someone like you, born into wealth, should just be grateful for the life you lead."
Maeve wanted to drop the subject, but curiosity got the better of her. "Why would you search through dead bodies for food? There aren't piles of dead bodies in Seathburn City."
Liam seemed genuinely amused by her question.
Maeve frowned, irritated by his laughter. "What's so funny? I'm serious here!"
"You actually believed me."
"Were you lying to me?"
"Yeah."
"So you're not a good person after all."
"I never claimed to be."
The beach by the pier stretched out endlessly, and Liam carried Maeve on his back for what felt like miles. But he didn't feel the slightest sign of exhaustion.
