Her mother had called this morning, before the accident, before her day had gone to shit. She was in town and wanted to see Becky. It had been a while since they had seen each other and Becky was looking forward to it. Her mum was a textbook hippie, and Becky had grown up in a commune and home-schooled until she was old enough to know that it wasn't the norm. As a teenager, Becky had insisted that she be allowed to go to a real school, and her mother had finally relented, even though she had railed against the influence of ‘the man’ and how schools were all about turning out little cookie-cutter versions of the ‘establishment.’ But despite all that, Sophie had been a good mum and Becky loved her and missed her, especially at moments like this when she felt her world was crumbling.
