Chapter Sixty Eight: Work in Progress

I saw Mom walk in through the mirror I stood before, adjusting my tie.
She held a tray containing a glass of orange juice and a plate of croissant sandwiches and set it on a nearby stool in my dressing room.
"Morning, Mom," I said.
"Morning, Landon. I brought you breakfast since you said you wouldn't wait for breakfast last night."
"You didn't have to do that."
"I can't let you go to work on an empty stomach," she said, her voice chiding, and she approached me with the glass of juice and one sandwich.
"Your health is the greatest priority. No matter how busy you are, it should come first."
She held the sandwich out to me, and I took a bite to appease her.
"I could order breakfast when I get to work," I said, chewing on my sandwich.
"Nothing beats a home-cooked meal," Mom replied.
I took another bite and swept my tongue across the corner of my mouth to lick off the crumb of sandwich that hung there.
