Naomi stood out on the landing for a long time after hanging up the phone with Charles. Finally, she snapped out of her stupor, sent Jay a message, and then tiptoed into the nursery, where Maya was fast asleep in her bed. One of her arms had popped out from underneath the covers, and she had kicked the blanket in her sleep so that it was now covering only half of her body.
