The door slammed shut behind me with a force that echoed through the empty house. My heart was still pounding in my chest, my breath coming in shallow bursts. I had never felt so exposed, so vulnerable. Max had finally seen through me, and now he knew the truth. Eva had been the one to save him all those years ago, not me.
I leaned against the wall, trying to steady myself, but the reality of what had just happened was too much to bear. Max had left me. He’d walked out of my life, and I had no idea how to fix it. The guilt, the anger, the humiliation it all mixed together in a storm inside me.
I could hear my mother’s voice calling from the living room, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. I needed to process everything, but there was no time. Not when everything was falling apart.
