The soft knock on my office door barely registered as I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the files spread before me. My mind wasn’t on the contracts or the numbers; it was on Eva. It always was. Her words, her anger, her pain they were etched into my brain, a relentless reminder of my failures. No matter how much I tried to drown myself in work, her face always crept into my thoughts, haunting me with the weight of everything I had done and failed to do.
“Sir,” Clara's voice broke through the haze, hesitant but firm.
I looked up sharply, my expression hardening out of habit. Clara, my secretary, stood at the door, her face pale but resolute. She held a tablet close to her chest, her knuckles white from gripping it so tightly. Her hesitation was unusual, and it immediately set me on edge.
“What is it?” I asked, my tone sharper than I intended. I ran a hand down my face, trying to shake off the irritation that wasn’t meant for her but for myself.
