The hospital corridor felt noisy as Sara’s voice rang out, her voice pierced through the tense silence like a jagged knife. “What are you doing here, Max?” Her tone was harsh, a mixture of disbelief and anger, but beneath it, there was something else hurt.
I didn’t look at her. I couldn’t. My eyes were fixed on Eva, standing there, her body rigid, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She looked as if she were preparing for a battle, and I knew that the words I said next could either make or break whatever fragile thread of understanding had formed between us.
“It’s none of your business,” I said, my voice cold and final, cutting through the air like a blade.
Sara’s face twisted in shock, and for a moment, I thought she might lash out. But instead, her lips trembled with the weight of my words. Her eyes flashed with anger, but it was clear she was hurt, hurt by my dismissal, hurt by the fact that I wasn’t here for her.
