I sat behind my desk, staring blankly at the stack of documents in front of me. My mind wasn’t on the reports or the contracts. It hadn’t been for weeks.
I rubbed my temples, trying to push back the headache that had been building all day. Sleep had become a rare luxury, and the weight of my mistakes was suffocating. Eva’s face haunted me her tear-streaked cheeks, the pain in her eyes when I’d pushed her away.
A soft knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts.
“Come in,” I said.
Clara, my secretary, stepped in, her usual calm demeanor tinged with unease. She held a tablet in her hands, her lips pressed into a thin line.
“What is it?” I asked, leaning back in my chair.
“There’s news about Lila,” she began cautiously.
At the mention of the maid who had framed Eva, my attention sharpened. “What about her?”
Clara hesitated, her eyes darting to the floor before meeting mine. “She was found dead in her hotel room this morning.”
