The tension between Sara and me was palpable, a tightrope stretched dangerously thin. I could feel the weight of her venomous gaze, her words still echoing in my mind like sharp claws scraping against a chalkboard. The crowd around us had thinned, most guests returning to their seats or retreating to quieter corners, but Sara had stayed, desperate to get the last word.
Her sneer deepened, her lips curling into a twisted smile as she crossed her arms. “What’s the matter, Eva? Cat got your tongue?” she hissed, her tone loud enough to draw lingering stares from nearby tables. “You think this little show of yours means something? You’re nothing compared to me.”
I stood still, letting her words hang in the air for a moment. My calm seemed to enrage her further, her nostrils flaring as she stepped closer.
