Chapter 50
Pregnant?!
Unbelievable! How could I, Melissa, possibly be pregnant after years of abstinence?!
I'm so angry, I feel like I'm about to explode.
"You!"
Melissa spread out her hands in exasperation, her gaze on Joseph was far from friendly.
"Give me my child back! Go back to wherever you came from!”
Joseph hugged Alvina tightly, and sighed at Melissa, "You really are an ungrateful woman~ I did you a big favor and this is how you repay me? Plus, if I leave now, how will you and Alvina get home after her shot?”
"We'll take a taxi!"
Melissa, chin lifted, looked as stubborn as ever.
No surprise there. She had been raising a child on her own for years and was accustomed to being strong. She would not deliberately show weakness in front of anyone.
As Melissa stood her ground, she looked at Joseph as though he owed her a fortune. Joseph checked his watch and said to Melissa calmly
"It's already late at night, are you sure you can get a taxi quickly? If Alvina catches a cold from the cold, don't regret it!”
As Joseph made a move to get up, Melissa stopped him, which was exactly what he had in mind.
"Hey, wait a minute!"
Melissa immediately blurted out.
"Oh, so you're regretting it so soon?"
Joseph sat in his chair with a victorious look on his face and turned to look at Melissa with interest.
"You're right. It's so late now, we won't be able to get a taxi. You should stay and go with us. I'll pay you later,"
Melissa finally softened her tone, earnestly saying it while looking at Joseph.
"Pay? What a joke. I am the illustrious young master of the Clarkson family, why would I need your money? All I want is an apology"
Joseph locked eyes with Melissa, the two of them engaged in a psychological contest.
After a moment of inner struggle, Melissa still couldn't get the words out.
"You were the first to speak rudely. Why should I apologize to you?"
"Tell me, what did I say wrong?"
Joseph asked, raising an eyebrow and pretending to be confused.
Melissa was at a loss for words, she embarrassingly admitted
"I... I... I'm not pregnant."
"Oh."
Joseph responded. He wanted to laugh but held it back. She was a woman who had rich experiences in love, why was she so shy about these topics?
Joseph immediately retorted
"You did well with the precautions, okay?"
"Joseph! Get lost now!"
Melissa stood up from her seat abruptly, startling the patients and their families nearby.
Joseph hurriedly pulled Melissa back to her seat and apologized to the people around them
"Sorry, my girlfriend is having a mid-life crisis."
"Give me my kid back!"
Melissa threatened quietly, snatching Alvina back from him.
"Mommy, what's wrong?"
Alvina opened his sleepy eyes and asked in a childish voice.
"Nothing, go back to sleep."
Melissa lightly replied, patting Alvina's back. In a few minutes, she herself fell asleep.
The glaring white light in the hospital made people feel serious yet anxious. Melissa with her head tilted, was lying on the chair, under the direct beam of the white light which illuminated her pale and tired face.
She was frowning lightly, but the corners of her mouth wore a serene smile.
Joseph, looking at Melissa sleeping in the light, found her quite adorable.
Yet, the contrast between her being asleep and when she wakes up was so apparent that it reminded him of a discordant melody.
This melody kept reverberating in Joseph's mind, failing to settle down.
Two hours later, Melissa was ruthlessly awakened. Just as she was about to swear, she saw the nurse had already taken off Alvina's drip.
"Melissa, let's go."
Joseph picked up Alvina, leading the way out. Melissa thought Joseph would ridicule her for not watching the IV bag, but to her surprise, Joseph only woke her up to tell her it was time to go home.
Instead of walking straight out of the hospital, Joseph, carrying Alvina, turned a corner at the pediatric front hall. "Where are you going?"
A puzzled Melissa asked.
"Room number three."
Joseph simply replied. He wanted to ask the professor if Alvina needed to take any medicine before going home.
When he returned to Examination Room Three, Professor Johnson was resting his head on the table, and Nurse Amelia was listlessly drinking coffee.
"Professor, Alvina's fever is gone now. Should I get her some more medicines before we head home?"
Joseph brought Alvina to Professor Johnson. After feeling Alvina's forehead, he confirmed that her fever had indeed subsided.
"Even though Alvina doesn’t have fever now, there’s a possibility it might return. I’ll prescribe two types of medication for you.
If the temperature is below 38 degrees, she can take the fever-reducing medicine directly. If it goes above 38 degrees, she'll need to come to the hospital for fluids,"
Professor Johnson patiently advised, noting the medication methods and dosages in the medical record. He asked Amelia to place the order on the computer.
"Thank you, Professor,"
Thanked Joseph. Even though he often behaved arrogantly, he followed basic courtesies with strangers.
Melissa helplessly shook her head, these people did not understand his true nature, they were deceived by his politeness.
"You wait for me here, I'll go pick up Alvina's medicine," Joseph handed Alvina to Melissa and took a prescription form from Amelia, asking
"Where do I get the medicine?"
"First, pay at the front desk, then go to the pharmacy on the first floor"
Amelia explained as she and Joseph left Examination Room Three. At the same time, a female doctor from Examination Room Two also spotted Joseph and immediately shrieked before running back into her own room.
"Okay, I got it."
Joseph quickly paid at the front desk and then ran to the first floor to get the medicine.
It took him over ten minutes to return to the entrance of Examination Room Three.
He saw Amelia and the female doctor from Room Two chatting. Joseph didn’t pay any attention and walked straight towards the door.
"Hold on, handsome!"
The female doctor from Room Two quickly ran over to Joseph, looking extremely excited, she adjusted her breathing and asked
"Can I have your WeChat contact?"
Joseph glanced at the doctor, noticing that Amelia was also standing next to her in anticipation.
"I don't have WeChat"
Joseph coldly responded, opening the door to Room Three. He waved to Melissa.
"I've got the medicine, let's go."
Melissa, carrying the sleeping Alvina, walked out of Room Three. She overheard a female doctor's disappointed sigh, "How is that possible? He doesn't even have WeChat?"
Amelia watched Joseph's silhouette as he walked away, her words were sharp and cold.
"I simply do not wish to give it to you."
.......
Melissa sat comfortably in the passenger seat with Alvina nestled in her arms, the air conditioner was making the car very warm. Joseph was staring straight ahead at the road, his expression icy.
"Hey, I think I heard those two female doctors asking you for your WeChat?"
Melissa started, trying to probe him.
"Is that so?"
Joseph responded distractedly, turning the wheel.
"You're denying it, you definitely must be hiding something." Melissa tilted her head to study his expression.
"Whether I admit it or not, aren't you just jealous?"
Joseph glanced at Melissa through the rearview mirror, his tone very casual.
