During dinner, both Lillian Doyle and Vera Taylor stayed unusually quiet, just eating in silence.
Richard Taylor had a heavy look on his face, clearly hesitating over something. He didn’t speak until halfway through the meal. “Cassandra, we received a court summons today. Mr. Blackwood's suit against Lillian is scheduled to go to trial next Monday.”
Cassandra Taylor already guessed what her father wanted to say, but she didn’t respond right away. She just kept eating calmly.
Just as Richard was about to continue, she finally said, “Next Monday, huh? That’s fast, but not surprising. Mr. Blackwood’s known for being decisive. Year-end’s a perfect time to clean up messy business—wrap it up before the new year hits so you’re not starting January with a pile of crap to sort through.”
