Hearing Damien say that, Cassandra couldn’t pretend she wasn’t shocked. Her heart pounded, but seeing the sincerity in his expression, she felt a little more at ease. At least, he wasn’t trying to lie to her anymore.
“I believe you. But I need to know that you’re not hiding anything from me anymore, Mr. Damien.” Cassandra looked up, her gaze locked on his, clear and determined.
“Of course. Now that I’ve decided to come clean with you, Cass, I won’t hold anything back.” Damien felt a twinge of warmth as he looked into her eyes, full of trust and curiosity. He pulled her gently into his arms and began, his voice low.
“This all started over ten years ago, with the accident that was supposed to have killed Lucius.”
As soon as Lucius’s name came up, Cassandra tensed up in his arms without even realizing it. Damien—whether intentionally or not—started gently patting her back, trying to soothe the anxiety the name triggered in her.
