Mr. Hawthorne was still fuming. The tone that woman used—yeah, clearly not the first time something like this had happened.
Thinking back, they'd all been caught up in the mess after Faye passed, and no one had put effort into Mara’s birthday. No wonder someone saw an opening to take a shot at her.
Now that Mara was the only successor left for the Hawthorne family, any attack on her was basically a jab at the whole family.
A thought began to solidify in Mr. Hawthorne’s mind.
“Make sure Mara doesn’t find out I answered her call,” he said, voice low and stern.
“Yes, sir,” the butler nodded quickly, not daring to question it.
Meanwhile, across town, the attractive woman looked nervously at Ethan. “Mr. Carter, the other side hung up before I could finish.”
“That’s fine,” Ethan replied coolly, his eyes sharp, warning, “But if I hear even a whisper about this—”
“I swear, not even a comma will get out,” she said in a rush, shaking her head hard. No way was she going to mess this up.
