Early the next morning, after I got up, I found that Dr. Everett had left, but a caretaker had been added in the yard.
Grandma Margot told me Peregrine had hired her specifically to take care of my daily needs.
My health fluctuated. I knew I was dying.
Taking advantage of a day when I felt relatively well, I asked the caretaker to accompany me to the town market.
I entered a shop. The owner was a man in his fifties. Seeing my interest, he smiled and asked, "Miss, looking to buy a headstone for a family member?"
"For myself," I said calmly.
The caretaker beside me was startled and quickly pulled my arm. "Ms. Evangeline, what are you saying? You're perfectly fine. How can you buy this?"
I turned to the shop owner, my tone calm. "Sir, I'd like a simple headstone. No need for many words, just 'Evangeline's Grave' is fine."
