If not for the lingering throbbing pain in my temples from the fever, I might have truly believed I was dreaming.
“Don’t get too excited just yet.” She lifted her chin, looking down at me with an air of superiority. “If you fail to satisfy me, I’ll call it quits anytime.”
“Fine! You’ve always held the upper hand in our relationship. I’ll strive to be a worthy partner and won’t let you down!”
“A man’s empty promises are worthless.” Her expression suddenly hardened as she fixed her gaze on me. “Everett, this decision wasn’t made lightly. I weighed it more carefully than when I threw caution to the wind and came to you. So if you dare to lose me again, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
“I know.” I nodded solemnly.
“Then there’s nothing else to say. Lie down and rest.” Scarlett turned to leave, but I caught her arm just in time.
Scarlett paused, looking down at the hand I held. After a moment of silence, she looked up at me.
I looked at her, a hint of pleading and flattery
