At the entrance, I bent down to retrieve my shoes, but Everett crouched before I could.
His long fingers untied my shoelaces. “I’ll handle things like this from now on.”
I stared at him in disbelief, my eyes widening.
This time, I truly couldn’t maintain any composure.
“What… what’s wrong with you?” I pulled my foot back, avoiding his large hand, my heart pounding. “Everett, tell me… was my report actually correct? Did you have the doctor collude with you later to fabricate the results to protect me? Am I actually dying?”
