Claire's POV
I suddenly noticed how warm the cabin felt, or maybe it was just me. The air between us felt charged with something I wasn't ready to face.
"Christmas should be spent with family," I said quickly, changing the subject. "Won't your family be upset you're not with them?"
Klein's expression darkened. "My parents died years ago, and I'm divorced. There's just me."
The revelation made my heart ache for him. There was clearly more to his story, but the look in his eyes made me uncomfortable. I stood up, wincing as my healing wounds protested.
"It's getting late. Could you drive me back to my cabin?"
Klein didn't answer. He sat on the couch, staring at the floor. After what felt like forever, he stood and walked over to me. His hands gripped my shoulders.
"What are you doing?" My heart raced as Stella growled a warning inside me.
"Why do you always run from me?" His eyes bored into mine. "Can't you feel what's between us?"
