I was confused. Wasn't my identity supposed to be confidential? I hesitated before testing the waters and sent a message back. "Why did Harvey say I'm a nepotism hire?" Heather took a long time before finally replying. "I'm not sure. He just told everyone you were a nepotism hire, but we think he's just trying to smear you. Rumor has it he wanted to get his wife into the company, but HR hired you instead. He's probably mad about that." I went silent. I was tempted to tell her that it wasn't just about that. Harvey had plenty of reasons to hold a grudge against me. Noticing my lack of response, Heather quickly sent another message. "Don't stress too much. As long as you keep your head and suck up to him a little, you can survive. That's just how things work around here." I stared at my phone, feeling a wave of irony wash over me.
