Luckily, Andrew Anderson wasn’t exactly a top-tier hitman—he didn’t even think to turn off his phone while on a mission. In this dead-silent mountain forest at night, a ringtone was like an alarm. Even though he was a distance away, we could still catch the faint ring.
The sound lasted about a minute before it stopped. But it was enough to figure out the general direction.
We moved forward in a low crawl. Henry called again. This time the ringtone only played for a few seconds before cutting off. But in the total darkness, that brief flash from his phone screen gave us a clear idea of where he was hiding.
Henry scribbled something in my palm:
"Sniper spot, maybe armed."
He wanted me to stay back while he went alone.
But I saw the only “weapon” in his hand—a thick tree branch he probably picked up along the way. I instinctively grabbed his hand, eyes filled with worry.
He gave me a soft smile, kissed my cheek, and gestured for me to wait there for him.
