Just when I was completely out of it, a familiar, clear voice cut through the panic—
“Mom!”
It was Evan!
I looked up, heart skipping a beat. There he was, dragging Carmen by the hand, running straight towards me.
Even though Evan was a bit shorter than Carmen, he was still the boy of the two. Carmen usually looked after him like a big sister, but when things went south, she was the one crying and frozen with fear. It was Evan who held it together and managed to get her out of there safely.
"Auntie, my dad... dad..." Carmen’s whole body was trembling as she clung to me, voice shaky and panicked.
"Your dad just went to the restroom. He'll be back real soon. You're safe now, don’t be scared." I picked her up with one arm while holding Evan’s hand tightly with the other, silently trying to calm him down.
Ella’s face went pale when she couldn't spot Maya. Her eyes instantly darted to Evan. "Where's Maya?"
