My heart ached like hell. I was so pissed I didn’t care if I ran straight into thorny branches—I just had to get to Emma. Then, I bit down hard on her hand that was holding the branch.

But I didn’t. I clenched my jaw and refused to stop. She lashed out and kicked me hard in the stomach.
I flew backward, my head smashing into a tree root. Blood spilled out, soaking the bark red...
“You—you killed my sister. You’re a horrible person!” Gavin looked completely stunned.
I lay sprawled on the ground, blood trickling into my eyes so I couldn’t see much. I wasn’t sure if there was panic in Emma’s face, but what I could see clearly was Gavin—who’d always been kinda delicate—suddenly throwing a punch like a real boy, aiming right at Emma.
He actually stood up for me, fists and all.
