That morning, after Henry sobered up, he drove straight to work. He told me to stay home and wait—he’d come back tonight to pick me and Evan up, and we’d go back to our place, the one meant for our little family.
But right after I dropped Evan off at school and got back, ready to tidy up and head over to the studio, I bumped into Vera right at the front gate of the neighborhood.
She didn’t look weak or sick in the slightest. Her tone was sharp. “Did Henry come see you yesterday?”
