My hand slipped, and the glass hit the floor with a loud crash. I stood up without thinking. At the same time, the guy in the baseball cap bolted toward the back door of the bar.
I didn’t even get a chance to say anything to Summer—I just took off after him.
There was no fear in that moment. Just this burning need to know the truth.
Did he show up by accident? Or was he trying to say something?
I chased him out the bar, and Summer’s voice calling after me kept fading until I couldn’t hear her anymore.
The guy dashed across the street, then paused for a few seconds on the curb, looking straight at me. It felt like he was baiting me, reeling me in like I was a fish. I didn’t even stop to think about why—just ran right after him.
Then bam—I ran smack into a car that had just started moving. My body flew forward before smacking into a fire hydrant. My left leg took the worst of it, and the pain had me sweating instantly.
