Chapter 27 Salty
An hour later, Nancy was long gone.
In the dining room, a polished table gleamed under the light, set with four dishes and a soup. They looked decent, simple, and home-cooked.
Sebastian sat down, his dark eyes fixed on the meal before him. It had been a long time since he'd seen anything so ordinary, so domestic. He reached for his cutlery.
"Mr. Gates!"
Taylor stepped forward at once, hand instinctively out to stop him.
"It hasn't been tested yet."
It was second nature—nothing went into Sebastian's mouth without inspection first.
Sebastian's hand froze. Suddenly, Nancy's face flashed through his mind. That sweet but scathing smile, the words she'd practically ground out through clenched teeth—I'll make you dinner right away.
He even remembered her saying not long ago that she wanted him to stay alive.
He waved Taylor off.
"No need."
He picked up a glossy piece of roasted ham and slipped it between his teeth.
A second later, his striking face twisted, his brows pulling tight
