The rain didn’t let up for the whole day. The rain came through the window of the safe house,, and it made me imagine it was there to wipe away the sights beyond. However, nothing could change the memory I have from this evening. The smell of betrayal stayed clinging to me regardless of what I did.
I wasn’t looking for it at first. That old book, hidden behind an unsteady brick in the basement of my father’s old house as if it were some cursed diary prepared to attack. Water had damaged and warped the pages, but the ink remained clear. His handwriting had not lost its zing or smug quality. He proudly scribbles neat words for cartels, their fees, shipments, and blood agreements. I reached out and ran a finger along a line of the document.
