CHAPTER 58
Lila
I didn't have the courage to bend down, or even dare to pick the phone.
“I asked you a question, Lila,” he said, and I felt a shiver run through my spine.
“I don't owe you an answer,” I said, but the words came out shakier than I wanted.
“Oh, I think you do. We had a past together. What game are you making them play? What lies are you making them tell?”
His words struck my chest like knives, making me bleed internally. His words made me feel like a bad mother, teaching my kids how to lie right from their childhood. I tried to assure myself that they were lying because they had to. I was trying to protect them. That was it, right? I couldn't seem to assure myself enough.
“I. Do. Not. Owe. You. An. Explanation,” I spelt the words out as I quickly picked my phone from the floor, marching over to where the car was parked. I immediately regretted not bringing my own car.
I sat in the passengers seat as I waited for him to come and drive. His eyes narrowed at me,
