Bracing herself for the worst, Ariella forced a small smile and took the phone like it was a hot potato. "Hi," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
She had no idea what Lucian was going to say, and her nerves were a mess. If he blurted out weird stuff, Fiona might catch on. She really wanted to step out and take the call in private but didn't have a single excuse ready.
"Hello," Lucian replied, sounding polite but with a chill that made her heart skip.
