Over the next few days, Nellie moved through life as if in a daze. She went through the motions of caring for Jeremy, changing his dressings and fixing his meals, but her gaze often wandered. Her movements no longer had their usual precision. When she removed his stitches, her hands shook so badly she almost hurt him.
"Nellie, what's going on with you?"
Jeremy gripped her wrist a little too tightly. "Did Horatio give you trouble again? Is he still refusing to admit he's wrong?"
"N-no, it's not him."
She yanked her hand back as if she'd been burned. "He… He probably won't be causing trouble anymore."
Jeremy frowned but didn't press the matter.
Eventually, Nellie went to the hospital. When she passed the morgue, she slowed unconsciously. She didn't dare enter, so she stopped at the administrative office first.
"Pull up Horatio Hayes' complete medical record and death certificate," she said to the staff.
It didn't take long before my file was brought out.
