Matthew wrapped his arm around Serena as they got into the car. His face was cold, eyes dark with a quiet storm, saying nothing all the way back to the Cloudview Residences. Once home, he calmly told Jennifer to make Serena some ginger tea to warm up, then disappeared into his study and didn’t come out again.
Serena had never seen him like this—so unsettled. Deep down, she had a nagging feeling that something was off between him and Oliver, though she couldn’t put her finger on it. That night, she finally couldn’t hold back and knocked on the door to his study.
Since leaving Eileen’s Dessert Boutique, Matthew had looked like he was chewing glass. Even Lucas had been unusually cautious around him. If Serena still couldn’t tell something was fishy, then honestly, her head might as well be a flower pot.
Hearing the knock, Matthew leaned back, sighed, and rubbed the corners of his eyes. He sounded exhausted. “You should get some rest. I’ve still got work to do.”
