Dylan spoke so softly that only Serena Dawson could hear him, but his words still hit her like a truck. When Brody was born, the doctor had already said his health wasn't nearly as good as his brother’s. If things went smoothly, it wouldn't be a big deal, but once something went wrong—it wouldn’t be minor.
A wave of dread rose in Serena’s chest. She suddenly lifted her foot, eyes wide in disbelief as she stared at Dylan. Dylan's brows were furrowed, and he gave her a small, grim nod.
That was all it took. Everything else fell to the side. Her face tensed, and she made for the door, almost at a run. No matter how tough she seemed over the years, those two little boys were her softest spot—her whole world, really.
She moved too fast, completely flustered, and just as she reached the entrance, her foot twisted awkwardly. She grabbed the doorframe for support, pain flashing through her as helplessness flooded in.
