The call was from Maria.
Matthew Quinn instantly felt a wave of irritation. No matter how hard he tried to keep his distance from this woman, something always seemed to pull him back in. He wanted to shut her out, but somehow, he never quite could.
“What is it?” he asked, voice flat and cold.
“Where are you?” Maria’s voice came through the phone, sharp and to the point.
Matthew glanced at Brandon Garcia standing beside him. He gave him a light pat on the shoulder, signaling him to get in the car first, then took a few steps away and replied indifferently, “Home.”
Her answer came back just as calm, “I’m coming. Wait for me.”
Beep… beep… beep…
The call ended just like that. Matthew stared at the phone, frowning ever so slightly. Hadn’t he been vague on purpose? He said he was at home, sure—but didn’t say which one, let alone an address. And yet she was just gonna show up anyway? So much for that sharp brain of hers. Seemed like she wasn’t that clever after all.
