Mildred said, "I might not remember my past, but… I can still occasionally recall bits and pieces of it. I remember you've helped me put on socks before."
Dorian paused in surprise, but before he could think of how to answer, Mildred was already continuing, "Since they're usually scattered images, I sometimes can't tell whether they're real memories of things that actually happened or just my imagination."
While staring down at her, Dorian asked, "Why are you telling me this?"
Mildred replied with a smile, "Because when you were putting on the socks for me, your expression was infinitely gentle. Yet, you didn't mention anything about having done it before. That's why I think that memory might not be associated with anything good."
"And here I thought you would threaten to poison me to death if I didn't tell you," Dorian joked.
Mildred nodded. "Yeah, that's what I was going to say next, so you'd better think about this carefully when you go back."
With that, she took the umbrella
