Chapter 9
The thick stack of legal papers hit the floor, scattering across the tiles.
Hearing the noise, Jasmine walked over and bent down to pick up the papers. When she saw what they were, her eyes lit up. It was a divorce petition.
Inside, she was practically giddy. "Looks like the universe is on my side," she thought.
"No. Impossible! Penelope would never want to divorce me!" Damian shook his head, pulling out his phone to call her and get answers.
The moment the screen unlocked, his eyes landed on their chat box. She still hadn't replied to his messages. It felt like a bad omen had punched him squarely in the chest. His hands shook as he hit her number.
"Sorry, the number you've dialed is currently switched off…"
A jolt of dread shot through him.
In his memory, Penelope had never turned off her phone. Refusing to believe it, he dialed again and again. Every time, he got the same result.
His mind went blank. He couldn't make sense of what was happening.
