From my desk in my office, I watched Emily work.
Emily sat at her oak desk outside my door, her fingers dancing across her keyboard. A calm intensity was written in every line of her body. Her hair fell over one shoulder as she tilted toward the screen, her jaw set as she focused.
She was beautiful, yes. But not only on the outside. She was capable, smart, and steady under pressure.
I hadn’t been paying close enough attention. I didn’t see her for what she truly was.
The realization hit me with a low growl in my chest. For the past few weeks, I’d been so focused on strategy. More specifically, the strategy for my own plans. I was so involved with myself that I’d treated Emily like another part of the machine.
I leaned back in my chair, watching her type, and made a silent promise to myself.
