Cassie winced as Maxwell applied antiseptic to her wound. The physical pain was nothing compared to the ache in her heart.
"Easy there," Maxwell said, his voice gentle. "You took quite a hit."
Cassie's eyes darted around the unfamiliar apartment. "Where's Florian?"
Maxwell's face fell. "I'm sorry, Cassie. He's gone."
"Gone? What do you mean gone?"
"He left to return to his family."
Cassie's heart sank. "He... he just left me here?"
Maxwell nodded solemnly. "I'm afraid so. But there's more you need to know, Cassie. About yourself."
Cassie looked at him, confusion etched on her face. "What are you talking about?"
Maxwell took a deep breath. "You're what we call a wyld wolf."
"A what?"
"A wyld wolf. It's a rare type of werewolf that doesn't conform to the usual alpha-beta-omega hierarchy. You're... different."
Cassie shook her head. "I don't understand. I didn't even know I was a werewolf until... until..."
