CHAPTER SIX – MONEY TROUBLES
Cassie winced, her earlier joy evaporating like mist in the sun. "Jen, it's not what you think. I was in a tight spot, and—"
"Not what I think?" Jenna interrupted, her voice rising. "What I think is that my best friend has been hiding something huge from me. Something dangerous. How long has this been going on?"
Cassie sighed, running a hand through her hair. "A few months. I needed money for rent and bills, and the bank wouldn't give me a loan. Tony... he was a last resort."
Jenna's eyes widened in disbelief. "A few months? Cassie, why didn't you come to me? I could have helped you!"
"I didn't want to be a burden," Cassie said quietly. "You've got your own life, your own problems. I thought I could handle it on my own."
"Handle it?" Jenna scoffed. "That guy looked like he was one step away from breaking your kneecaps! This isn't 'handling it', Cassie. This is getting in way over your head."
