Aaron’s POV
I don’t doubt Mae’s claim for a second. Plotting to kill her is in line with everything those three have ever done.
I can feel my face heating, my blood boiling at the thought that people I’ve spent so many years of my life trusting, that anyone, tried to have her killed. Was it the gunman at the theater? Was that them?
My fist comes down hard on the table, sending all three mugs jumping. Mae and even Henry flinch, too.
I am seething, expelling hot air through my flaring nostrils as I try to stay calm, but I’m seeing red. “What did they say exactly?” I can’t look at Mae, can’t bear to meet her eyes with this fury taking me over.
Mae looked so confident just a moment ago. It was sexy. But it’s all gone now.
In my red-rimmed peripheral vision, she looks scared. “I don’t remember the exact details. It was the first time I ever shifted, and I was recovering from both a bullet wound and a rejection, so I was distracted.”
