I ate and then was pulled to my feet by Millie, who was convinced that we should dance.
"Dance with me," she said.
"We don't need music, just the ones in our heads." Once my feet got tired, I left her and walked to my favorite tree.
"I thought I would find you here," Riley said, walking up to me with a cup in his hand.
"Thirsty?"
"No, I'm fine," I said as he sat down. "We suffered a bit of a loss recently," he said.
"I don't understand what you mean," I said, accepting the cup anyway.
"It seems like your pack is holding onto a desperate attempt to keep themselves safe despite the death of their Alpha," his words cut into my chest, twisting my heart.
I cleared my throat, swallowing my tears.
"It's almost like they have much of a choice," I said. "But how bad was it?"
"Bad. Our scouts reported back. It was almost like they were trying to cling to some desperate hope. But I know better," he said.
