JANINE’S POV
I never thought he’d actually taken her seriously.
When Liam stormed out of the office earlier, I told myself he was just having a moment. That whatever feelings he thought he had for Natalie were just... curiosity.
She was new. She was different.
He didn’t know her much. He didn’t know anything about her beyond that pretty face and the damn white wolf.
But now? I could feel the distance between us like ice running down my spine.
It was supposed to be me.
We grew up together.
I was there when his mother died. I was there when my father—gods, my pathetic, drunken father—threw himself in front of Liam during that rogue ambush and died for him. Liam swore he’d always protect me. He promised.
So how the hell did we get here?
I slammed the front door behind me and stormed past my mother sitting stiff on the couch. Her arms were crossed and her lips were tight. She didn’t even glance at me, but I could feel her eyes cutting through me like knives.
“You’re home early,” she mutter
