An hour passed. Then two. Then three.
At last, the doors of the emergency room swung open.
Mallory stepped out and pulled off her mask. Her face was drawn with exhaustion.
Gabriel instantly straightened up and strode toward her. "How is she?"
"She took in a lot of seawater," Mallory said, her tone steady but heavy. "We've cleared her lungs. She's out of immediate danger for now."
She glanced at Gabriel. His clothes were soaked, his hair was disheveled, and the raw panic was still etched in his eyes.
She continued, "But she hasn't regained consciousness yet. We'll need to keep her under observation in a ward."
Gabriel's shoulders finally dropped, his entire frame sagging as if a massive weight had been lifted.
For a moment, he swayed.
She was alive. That was all that mattered.
