“I offended you earlier. Can you forgive me?” Angela asked, blushing as she apologized, regretting her foolish behavior.
“Don’t do that again in the future,” Richard replied, lifting his gaze. His eyes were clear and composed, as if that kiss meant nothing to him—completely insignificant, incapable of stirring his heart.
A flicker of disappointment passed through Angela’s eyes. She withdrew her freshly bandaged hands and softly promised, “Alright, I won’t overstep again.”
Richard gave her a deep, inscrutable look before shouldering his backpack. “We’re done climbing. Let’s head back.”
Angela knew her stamina wouldn’t carry her any further up the trail. She nodded, “Okay, let’s go.”
As she turned, her foot caught on an unsteady rock. She wobbled precariously—until a strong hand gripped her shoulder, steadying her.
Angela looked up at the man who had rescued her yet again, a pang of frustration tightening her chest. Did that kiss really mean nothing to him? Was it truly as insignificant
