The next morning dawned with a soft gray light, the city already humming to life below.
I dressed quietly, listening to the familiar weekday sounds drifting through the apartment walls. Ethan and Lucas were in the kitchen, their voices a gentle murmur behind closed doors.
I lingered in the hallway, pulling on my coat and gathering my things for work, when I caught the edge of their conversation.
“Come on, Lucas. Eat up. You’ll be late for school,” Ethan urged.
Lucas’s voice, deeper now “I don’t feel like going today, Dad. Can I just stay home? Please?”
There was the soft scrape of a chair, the rustle of a hand through hair. Ethan gave him that tired, fond look he reserved just for Lucas.
“Skipping school isn’t an option, bud. But isn’t the parent-child sports day coming up soon? Didn’t you say you wanted to get ready for it?”
